Today, Ty met me and the girls at Costco for lunch.
3 slices of pizza + 1 iced tea = $7. Guilt-free eating out!
With our food in hand, we sat down at one of those picnic-style tables that look like plastic but feel like concrete. Those damn tables manage to cause a childhood head trauma once every 8.2 seconds. (Maybe the constant sound of children crying is why Costco lunch is so cheap?)
Abby sat next to Ty on one side, and he held Bailey. I was on the other side, reveling in the fact that no one was sitting on, bumping into, or hanging on me.
Halfway through our lunch, a woman in her 50s came and sidled up right next to me, facing me.
My first thought:
GET AWAY, STRANGER LADY.
“Excuse me,” she said.
A little late, but okay. I turned to face her.
“Can I tell you something?” she asked.
My mind started running through the possibilities – was she going to tell me my daughters were beautiful? To enjoy this time because it goes so fast? That Costco was now stocking Uncle Eddie’s cookies?
“Sure,” I said.
“Can I whisper it to you?”
Weird. “Uh, sure.”
The lady moved closer and cupped her hand to my ear.
“When your daughter sits down, her butt crack shows.”
I pulled away and turned to face forward again. “Okay,” I said.
She continued: “That’s really not a good thing.”
“Okay, got it.”
She got the hint and left.
I rolled my eyes.
Why did she bother whispering when Abby was right there, watching the whole thing unfold? Did she expect me to come up with an on-the-spot lie to my daughter about why some strange lady at Costco was whispering in my ear?
So I told Ty and Abby what the woman said. On the plus side, we ended up having an interesting conversation about strangers and personal boundaries.
But several hours later, I’m still shaking my head.
- Abby’s FIVE, it’s not like she’s a teenager with her hoo-ha hanging out, and
- Why were you looking at my 5-year-old’s backside anyway?
For the record, I inspected the situation for myself, and it was definitely NOT a big deal.
What do you think – did I overreact to someone who thought they were being helpful? Or should the lady have minded her own butt crack?
